Music Analysis for Linkin Park's New Divide

This music video is Linkin Park's: New Divide, during the course of this music video we see a combination of a performance element and clips from a film element. At the time this music video was released it was released along with the film: Transformers: Revenge Of The Fallen, this was a tie in relase with the song to promote the film thus explaining why the narrative element of this music video is clips from the movie in which we see a variety of characters from the film both humans and giant robots, this can therefore be referncing many science fiction filmsthat include robots, such as: The Terminator franchise, in which in the post apocalyptic future robots rule the planet, whereas the performance element is of the band performing in a cave that also appears in the movie, this being our first indication of the Intertextual references apparent in this video. This video utilizes many techniques in bridging the gap from performance to storyline with simplistic and fluid transitions, one of which is the use of CGI (computer generated imaging) which displays distorted silhouettes or the actual embodiment of the band members and/or narrative. Another technique this video uses is the use of lyrics being sung as the action in the video represents it, for example the lyrics read as follow "I remember black skies, the lightning all around me" and as those lyrics are being sung the lead singer is in the shot singing but his appearance and the actual shot have been edited so there are blue waves going across the screen and embracing the lead singer, this shows the connection between the lyrics and the action therefore bringing a symbolic meaning as well as a physical meaning to the lyrics. There are many genre characteristics present in this music video, such as the flashing lights and the visual images created, that are reminiscent of the patterns and waves you can see if you play a song on Windows Media Player, yet another Intertextual reference. Another genre characteristics would be the portrayal of the band's performance, in which all band members in the video are jumping about and are very enthusiastic, their performance is very physical and extremely active which in turn gives the audience the impression that there is a lot going on and in doing so may have an effect upon the audience  which influences them to become more active even if it is only for a short while. All this utimately gives off an overall mood of the video and reflects the thoughts and views of the band to give a very positive and extremely active mood, although when watching this music video it becomes apparent to the viewer that the narrative is a non linear montage and does not tell a story directly from start to finish for the audience to follow, but rather shows them clips and a variety of images so that the audience can piece it all together and recreate the story as they see it in their eyes.

  1. You have expressed yourself well and have looked at narrative construction and also some of the representational issues and intertextuality. A difficult video to analyse as in some respects links to film make it more like a trailer. You may want to use some elements from this video even though you are working in folk genre. Start analysing videos in your chosen genre asap.

  2. Second analysis due this weekend. Jake ... you must start extensive research into chosen genre ... and see my comments on the 'to camera' performance element.

  3. Jake - it concerns me that so much filming has taken place without thorough research into genre.

    Third analysis now due.
