Music Video Treatment

The concept I have for my music video is ‘Love story’ between two young individuals. At the start of the video I wish to show a young man (our protagonist) waking up in his bed to discover he has ‘missed call’ from his girlfriend, I wish to start the video setting the mood and hinting at a back story in which shows the distressed relationship between the young couple, I intend to do this through close ups of the protagonist’s face to convey his emotions and also through the use of the mise-en scene. At which point we see the protagonist set off on a journey to mend his relationship, as he begins his journey I wish to set him in a very urban landscape walking through streets, this is create the illusion that he is being fully enveloped by the city, I wish to make the journey appear as if it is a great distance so the protagonist will walk through the city and then reach a point where he leaves the city and enters a more rural environment and continues his journey through the countryside to arrive at his love interest’s house in the countryside, in which she opens the door upon his arrival and smiles, and ending the video.

To make my concept work, I wish to show the protagonist is overwhelmed by the city through the use of camera angles, such as low angles showing the protagonist in the fore ground and the monumental buildings over shadowing him, I would also like to experiment during the editing process with the saturation and the contrast of the video to give a very dull and monotone visual image, symbolizing the dark and life draining embodiment of the urban city, I wish also to experiment with the speed of the video to emphasize the protagonist’s loneliness and the size of the journey ahead. When the protagonist reaches the rural point in the video I wish to also experiment again with the visuals to give a more vibrant and alive feel which could symbolize the warmth and the intense emotion the characters are experiencing.

The target audience of my music video is both males and females that age’s range between 16 and 22 years old. The audience come under the D and C1 class categories that are aspires, aspiring to be a part of the B class category, the journey of the protagonist and his determination shows the aspirers that they can achieve their goals through the hard work displayed by the protagonist.

  2. I like the simplicity of the concept and you have suggested how you will achieve effects. There are some clearly expressed ideas about the mood you want to create and you have suggested shots and how you will achieve effects.

As I understand it ... the traveller is also going to be lead vocalist? You need to address how the performance element will intercut with back story. How you will intercut performance and love story. You could refer to the way this is done in other music videos and how the two are differentiated.

A good start and a clear focus. There's a lot of "I ... " in this treatment ... you are conceiving this as a group? Suggest you write about the ideas and concept in third person ... eg: "To make my concept work, I wish to show the protagonist is overwhelmed by the city through the use of camera angles, .. " "To realise the concept, the protagonist will be shown overwhelmed by the city with use of extreme camera angles ..."

You need to look at the target audience ... is "aspirer" the audience for this genre of music?

  3. Jake - it is important that storyboard/shot list/shooting schedule are completed before shoots. They are done for a purpose.
