Music Video Analysis for Mumford & Sons 'The Cave'

This music video is Mumford & Son's 'The cave'. At the begining of the video before the music starts we see all four band members arriving at a beach on mopeds carrying instruments on thieir backs, once they arrive they give the instruments to four other men dressed in what appears to be marching band uniforms, one of the band members says "we heard you were looking for these" this could imply that the instruments belonged to these men in the first place. After the band return the instuments they begin to leave on their mopeds and the music starts. From this point onwards the video has a narrative element but also a performance element, but the performance element is mixed in with the narrative and actually becomes apart of the narrative, a way in which this is acheived is whilst the audience is shown many close ups of the band members the video also uts back to close ups of the four men on the beach, this could symbolise that the men on the beach are also the men on the mopeds, that there lies a strong underlying connection between the band members and the men on the beach. Another way in which we see the connection is close ups of the band singing the lyrics of the song whilst on their journey aswell as close ups of the men on the beach also singing the lyrics. One technique I noticed in this video was the use of slow motion, as the band members are travelling it appears that the footage has been slowed down, this could signify the length of the journey, that they are travelling a great distance to arrive at their destination, this gives the audience a build up and makes them ask themselves 'where are these people going?' 'what will be waiting for them when they arrive?'. At the end of the video the music fades out the band members return to the beach and collect the instruments back from the men on the beach and then leave, this is how the music video started but in reverse showing a circular narrative with the music video ending the same way it began.

Find Your Tribe Response

You are an Indie Kid! There’s nothing like the twang of a guitar to get your Converse tapping. Indie Kids are part of a mass – whether that means swaying with their friends at a gig, commenting on Drowned in Sound’s message board or trawling through band profiles on MySpace for the next exciting sound. It’s amazing what can still be done with a guitar, you know.

Music Analysis for Linkin Park's New Divide

This music video is Linkin Park's: New Divide, during the course of this music video we see a combination of a performance element and clips from a film element. At the time this music video was released it was released along with the film: Transformers: Revenge Of The Fallen, this was a tie in relase with the song to promote the film thus explaining why the narrative element of this music video is clips from the movie in which we see a variety of characters from the film both humans and giant robots, this can therefore be referncing many science fiction filmsthat include robots, such as: The Terminator franchise, in which in the post apocalyptic future robots rule the planet, whereas the performance element is of the band performing in a cave that also appears in the movie, this being our first indication of the Intertextual references apparent in this video. This video utilizes many techniques in bridging the gap from performance to storyline with simplistic and fluid transitions, one of which is the use of CGI (computer generated imaging) which displays distorted silhouettes or the actual embodiment of the band members and/or narrative. Another technique this video uses is the use of lyrics being sung as the action in the video represents it, for example the lyrics read as follow "I remember black skies, the lightning all around me" and as those lyrics are being sung the lead singer is in the shot singing but his appearance and the actual shot have been edited so there are blue waves going across the screen and embracing the lead singer, this shows the connection between the lyrics and the action therefore bringing a symbolic meaning as well as a physical meaning to the lyrics. There are many genre characteristics present in this music video, such as the flashing lights and the visual images created, that are reminiscent of the patterns and waves you can see if you play a song on Windows Media Player, yet another Intertextual reference. Another genre characteristics would be the portrayal of the band's performance, in which all band members in the video are jumping about and are very enthusiastic, their performance is very physical and extremely active which in turn gives the audience the impression that there is a lot going on and in doing so may have an effect upon the audience  which influences them to become more active even if it is only for a short while. All this utimately gives off an overall mood of the video and reflects the thoughts and views of the band to give a very positive and extremely active mood, although when watching this music video it becomes apparent to the viewer that the narrative is a non linear montage and does not tell a story directly from start to finish for the audience to follow, but rather shows them clips and a variety of images so that the audience can piece it all together and recreate the story as they see it in their eyes.

How music festivals are changing

In recent years we have seen the proliferation in popularity of attending music festivals, this could be down any number of things, such as: Identity, the accelerated advancements in the music industry and bold advertisements. With music being every now and it being the most easy to access than ever before through the aid of such websites like YouTube, artists offer the chance to their fans by playing their music at festivals so that it’s not just the same music you can access online it’s also the experience of being there and apart of the music itself. Many people would now argue that Music festivals have become apart of British culture during summer time and that Music festivals have built up a reputation of being mainstream, especially some of it’s big and well known festivals such as Glastonbury, Latitude and V festival, it seems now that people attend the festivals more for the experience and the atmosphere as opposed to just turning up for the music, it’s seen in teenagers as ‘a rite of passage’ socializing with those around them interested in the same things as them giving them more self esteem and helping them redefine themselves by identifying with the people they spend time with, which could explain why festival goers continue to wear their wristbands for weeks afterwards.

Music Video Treatment

The concept I have for my music video is ‘Love story’ between two young individuals. At the start of the video I wish to show a young man (our protagonist) waking up in his bed to discover he has ‘missed call’ from his girlfriend, I wish to start the video setting the mood and hinting at a back story in which shows the distressed relationship between the young couple, I intend to do this through close ups of the protagonist’s face to convey his emotions and also through the use of the mise-en scene. At which point we see the protagonist set off on a journey to mend his relationship, as he begins his journey I wish to set him in a very urban landscape walking through streets, this is create the illusion that he is being fully enveloped by the city, I wish to make the journey appear as if it is a great distance so the protagonist will walk through the city and then reach a point where he leaves the city and enters a more rural environment and continues his journey through the countryside to arrive at his love interest’s house in the countryside, in which she opens the door upon his arrival and smiles, and ending the video.

To make my concept work, I wish to show the protagonist is overwhelmed by the city through the use of camera angles, such as low angles showing the protagonist in the fore ground and the monumental buildings over shadowing him, I would also like to experiment during the editing process with the saturation and the contrast of the video to give a very dull and monotone visual image, symbolizing the dark and life draining embodiment of the urban city, I wish also to experiment with the speed of the video to emphasize the protagonist’s loneliness and the size of the journey ahead. When the protagonist reaches the rural point in the video I wish to also experiment again with the visuals to give a more vibrant and alive feel which could symbolize the warmth and the intense emotion the characters are experiencing.

The target audience of my music video is both males and females that age’s range between 16 and 22 years old. The audience come under the D and C1 class categories that are aspires, aspiring to be a part of the B class category, the journey of the protagonist and his determination shows the aspirers that they can achieve their goals through the hard work displayed by the protagonist.

End of The Road Festival

The end of the road festival is predominantly folk/indie music festival that takes place annually at Larmer tree gardens in the north of Dorset and takes place over a few nights at the later end of August and the star of September.

The end of the road festival was introduced in September 2006 after the people behind it wished to put on small and intimate festival, where people came for the friendly and relaxed feel and "take pride in being an independent festival".

Today the End of the Road festival offers 'festival goers' the experience of listening to some quality music where "The entire line-up is the Headliner in itself" and to gain an intimate experience between the audience and the artists.

Lyrics for 'Paper People'

Paper people walking through streets of fire
Looking for a taste of love
Growing hard of hearing you were losing touch
All the while a deeper fire

If you lie in the eye of the storm
The wild heart is born
So there lies a distance in between you and I
You know that I can feel it well

When I go looking you are hard to define
Fortified inside yourself
If you lie in the eye of the storm
The wild heart is born

In the falling light
Bring your love and your desire
On a road back through the night
There can be no denial

Paper people walking through streets of fire
Looking for a taste of love
Growing hard of hearing you were losing touch
All the while a deeper fire

If you lie in the eye of the storm
The wild heart is born
What Will We Become?

What will we become when our life is a setting sun ?
Through the rich and the poor times
At last we have found something we can be sure of
Lay our fears in the ground

Let’s go into the night where no one can find us
Lost out in the time
Feel the fire of the sun
Our love is tied up

What lies behind the king and queen and the veils of time ?
All the lights that we saw down the long winding corridors
Howling winds through the valley call you out in the wild
Let’s go into the night where no one can find us

Lost out in the time
Feel the fire of the sun
Our love is tied up
Where I lay my head in your arms outstretched

Never needed more This I know for sure
Let’s go into the night where no one can find us
Lost out in the time
Feel the fire of the sun
Our love is tied up

Analysis of Afrika Shox by Leftfield

This video shows a half naked black male walking the streets of an urban city, presumably New York city (as if he has just come off a slave ship). During the course of the video we see the Protagonist reaching out to citizens that walk past him, the most notable of these is a middle aged middle class white man reading a newspaper. He shifts his gaze away form the black man who seems to be begging for help. another White middle class man unnoticeably walks into the black man's arm which breaks off, suggesting the black man is not entirely human but is a zombie. We are then shown a low angle of the white man who seems disinterested in the black man's pain and bewilderment. This could be an impression that we get of the western societies attitude towards Africa.

There are many Genre characteristics present in this video for example; The urban setting indicates the urban nature of the genre, the flashing lights the techno/dance generic roots, the underground location also connoting the roots of the genre. overall the mood is dark and represents New York negatively.

The video also utilizes the combination of both lyrics and visuals to emphasize the undertone of the video, for example; The black man walks up to the metal fence showing him behind the wire which would suggest separation from the protagonist and society itself, the lyrics being said at this time are 'Let's get electrified' which also links to electrified fences often designed to keep a balance of two things either side of the fence preventing them from crossing.

Later on in the video we see a group of white break dancers underground, which could suggest that the roots of Rock'n'roll, which originated from Africa have colonised by the break dancers, therefore showing the break dancers have colonised the black music. We then see the protagonist fall to the ground and is left on his back without both hands and one of his legs as another black man approaches him and asks 'Do you need a hand?' which shows the Irony that this man was asking him if he needed help, and pointing out that this man has literally lost his hands.

One of the many Inter textual references this video has is that of Ridley Scott's 1982 film: Blade Runner. In this film, Harrison Ford plays a 'Blade Runner' a special division of the police set up to locate and assassinate 'Replicants' which are machines that look like humans. the inter textual reference would be the 'outcast' feeling, that they are not accepted, in this music video we are led to believe the black man is the outcast, whereas in 'Blade Runner' the Replicants are the outcasts but in this extract from the ending of Blade runner we see that in fact the replicants might not the outcasts but rather Harrison Ford's character could be, which could also apply to this music video suggesting that the western society is the outcast.

3 Interesting Music Videos from Music Video Jam top 100 2010

Solillaquists of Sound "Marvel" Directed by X:144 - Shot on a 7D from X:144 on Vimeo.

I found this to be an interesting music video due to the camera angles and the quick cuts used. Which drives the audience to continue watching and understand the narrative of the video. Some sections of the video are deliberately slowed down in sync with the slowed to music to help the flow and pace of the video

When I stumbled across this video it instantly caught my eye because of the uniqueness it has. This video gives the impression that it was filmed within one take. The video is of an elborate contraption known as a 'Rube Goldberg machine' showing the complex machine performing throughout a warehouse.

Kasper Bjørke "Young Again" Music Video from Karim Huu Do on Vimeo.

When searching through music video's I came across this one and it drew my attention due to the strangeness and surreal nature of its narrative, it is this sense of ambiguity and mystery which drives the audience to continue watching in hope that all will be revealed. I felt this music video best reflects the impression of the music and its lyrics, at quite a slow pace its quite easy to get lost in the video's unique world.
